Study Tip: Setting Academic Goals
The best thing about a new school year is the chance it brings for a fresh start. Here are some tips to make sure you start it off right:
- Think of one big goal for you to achieve this school year. Make it something specific and quantifiable–like raising your grade point average to a certain number, making an A in a tough class–but keep it realistic as well.
Why do you think it is important to set realistic goals?
- Once you have your goal in mind, write down the steps you’ll need to take to achieve it. You could make a list of objectives to complete (like getting at least an A- on your first assignment) and/or write a list of commandments for yourself (Thou shalt not be distracted by viral videos during study time, etc.).
Why do you think that this is an important step to take?
- Be organized. Organization is the key to reaching any academic goal. Make sure you know ahead of time when each assignment is due by keeping your agenda in a safe place. (Later, we will discuss using Google Calendar as a method of keeping track of your assignments and commitments.) It is important to record other events like family gatherings, club meetings, soccer practices on your calendar.
Why do you think that it is important to write everything down on your calendar?
- Motivate yourself. Yes, reaching your academic goal is a reward in itself, but if you think of another way to reward your success you may be all the more likely to make it in the end. Think of what makes you happy and allow yourself to indulge in that when you win the day!
